What I Bought:
|

|
|
(clockwise
from top left) Cosmonaut Volkov, Tlacalula Pink,
Juanne Flamme and Kellogg's Breakfast tomatoes I'm
quite overwhelmed with tomatoes from my Princeton,
N.J., garden at the moment and so I wasn't intending
to buy any tomatoes in the market today. But I
couldn't resist trying these intriguingly named
heirloom varieties, all of which were new to me.
According to the signage on the Conuco Farm table
where I bought these, the Cosmonaut Volkovs are
Ukranian in origin and "have won taste test after
taste test." The Tlacalula Pink tomatoes are from
Oaxaca, Mexico. The Juanne Flamme variety is from
France an is "extremely productive," a trait
welcomed by farmers frustrated by the low yields of
many heirloom varities.
Recipes:
* Nine tomato
recipes from around the world
* Heirloom
tomato salad with pesto vinaigrette
Price: $4/lb.

(left
to right) Pink butterbeans, Jacob's Cattle Beans and
Perigion beans In the
fall, heirloom shelling beans are one of my favorite
seasonal specialties in this market. It's still a
bit early for the fuller
array that will be available in about a month.
Guess I'll have to come back next month for my
annual fix of hairy black edamame soybeans.
Price: $4/lb.
