Market Report
Venice Beach, Calif.
Friday, October 27, 2006

The Market:
Venice Farmers Market
Venice Way and Venice Blvd.
Los Angeles, Calif.
7 to 11 a.m.
(310) 399-6690

Market-Goer
: Mark Thompson

This is a low-key market in the bohemian (and increasingly gentrified) Venice Beach section of Los Angeles, a few blocks from the Pacific shore. About a dozen fruit and vegetable growers serve the market and there are perhaps half a dozen other vendors of baked goods, kettle popcorn and other items.

What I Bought:

Fuyu Persimmons (top), Winesap and Pink Lady Apples

Pomegranate

Price: $.50/each

Cilantro

I'm here today with one thing in mind: last-of-the-season fresh salsa. And you've got to have cilantro. Good tomatoes of course, are also mandatory (see below). And peppers, and tomatillos (ditto). But you can't make good fresh salsa without cilantro.

Peppers

Heirloom Tomatoes

The tomatoes weren't mid-summer pictures of perfection. But it's not mid-summer. If these weren't scarred, I'd wonder how many thousands of miles they had travelled to get here. These are locally grown, and fantastic tasting for so late in the year.

Tomatillos

Simmered and pureed tomatillos are the secret ingredient in my fresh summer salsa, which consists of diced tomatoes, onions, peppers (including a few hot jalapenos and/or serranos) and chopped salsa, topped off with a couple of cups of thick pureed tomatillos.
