New York City was still noticeably
buzzing with excitement today after yesterday's election
victory by the city's clear favorite candidate for U.S.
president, Barack Obama.
 |
But the mood wasn't dampened by the
light rain that began to fall in late afternoon. The
market was quite full, with some last-of-
fast-fading-summer crops, such as tomatoes and
eggplants, sharing space with lots of apples, winter
squash, potatoes and other cold-weather crops. |

eggplants There
were still piles of Jersey tomatoes in the
market today, and also some end-of-the-season
eggplant. There have been some light freezes
in recent weeks in the farming regions
surrounding New York City, but it's seemed
like a warm fall to me, a recently transported
southern Californian. I'm still eating my own
home-grown tomatoes from my backyard garden in
Rocky Hills, N.J., which I picked green
several weeks ago and have ripened on the
kitchen windowsill. So I'm not surprised to
see a few summer crops still hanging on in the
market, like these eggplants.
Price: $1.60/lb.
