Market-Goer
: Mark Thompson

New York City was still noticeably buzzing with excitement today after yesterday's election victory by the city's clear favorite candidate for U.S. president, Barack Obama.

But the mood wasn't dampened by the light rain that began to fall in late afternoon.

The market was quite full, with some last-of- fast-fading-summer crops, such as tomatoes and eggplants, sharing space with lots of apples, winter squash, potatoes and other cold-weather crops.

eggplants

There were still piles of Jersey tomatoes in the market today, and also some end-of-the-season eggplant. There have been some light freezes in recent weeks in the farming regions surrounding New York City, but it's seemed like a warm fall to me, a recently transported southern Californian. I'm still eating my own home-grown tomatoes from my backyard garden in Rocky Hills, N.J., which I picked green several weeks ago and have ripened on the kitchen windowsill. So I'm not surprised to see a few summer crops still hanging on in the market, like these eggplants.

Price: $1.60/lb.
